Lone Bear Cabin is 20 minutes from the Thornton Gap entrance to Skyline Drive and 24 minutes from the Front Royal entrance.

Hikes we recommend

  • Heiskell Hollow to Overall Run Falls: the closest park trail, about 10 minutes from the cabin. A 6-mile round trip to the park's highest waterfall (93 feet).
  • Mary's Rock: a 3.5-mile out-and-back from Thornton Gap with big views.
  • Compton Peak: a 2.4-mile loop with columnar basalt formations.
  • The Appalachian Trail crosses Skyline Drive at many points.
